Jonas Johansson is an anywhere-based artist, educator, and designer from Glommen, Halland. His work explores light and technology through play, community, and (un)human intervention.

Since 2024 Jonas plans courses for Svenska Tecknare, taught Visual Communication at Beckmans (2017–2025), served as Industry Leader at Hyper Island (2014–2022), and have lectured at Aalto University, Konstfack, School of Machines, Berghs, Nyckelviken, Futuregames, to name a few.

Jonas's professional experience includes KRAM/WEISSHAAR (SE/DE), FIELD (UK) and Moment Factory (CA). He interned at W+K Tokyo (JP) and UltraSuperNew (JP).

Under the moniker Scenic Route, he has performed for artists such as La Fleur, Kornel Kovacs, Gesafellstein, Yuksek and all time idol, The Field.

Today, Jonas runs the artist residency Visualia, produces the fulldome film festival Dome Dreaming, co-creates events with PLX, collaborates with the lighting collective Svartljus, and co-founded Nordic Audiovisual Artists. He shares a studio in Stockholm with SMASH and Rose Hallgren.

Education

Professional Experience

2017–2025: Senior Lecturer, Beckmans College of Design, Stockholm

At Beckmans College of Design, I taught within the Visual Communication BFA, with a focus on Art & Technology, Motion Graphics, Interaction Design and AI. My teaching covered physical computing, embedded electronics, projection mapping, 3D modelling and animation, and game design, often combining conceptual development with hands-on technical practice. Alongside my teaching, I developed an independent learning platform, www.exploring.technology, where course material and technical resources were developed, published, and maintained.

2015–2016: Designer, KRAM/WEISSHAAR, Stockholm/Munich

As a designer at KRAM/WEISSHAAR I worked on embedded hardware for bespoke lighting infrastructure, interaction design for innovative use of new materials and maintenance of custom hardware and software systems. I developed software in Python and C++, and built custom camera modules, primarily in combination with Raspberry Pi. I devised interactive lighting systems with LEDs, Arduino, and developed synchronisation with other electrical systems, for embedding in high-end products.

2014–2022: Industry Leader, Hyper Island, Stockholm

At Hyper Island I was a recurring Industry Leader, facilitating learning journeys for up to 100 students at a time, including remotely via Zoom in 2020. My courses emphasised exploring technology, and challenged students to work with game mechanics, tactile design and human interaction. I also built Hyper Island's first version of a maker space and tech lab.

2014–2015: Designer, FIELD, London   2012: Designer, Moment Factory, Montréal

I was one of the first employees at Field, one of the UK's most prominent design studios, and worked alongside founders Marcus Wendt and Vera Maria Glahn. I built interactive systems in Unity for screen and VR experiences, developed embedded lighting hardware for wearable tech, and coded innovative web experiences, in addition to contributing to design documentation and presentations.

2011: Design intern, UltraSuperNew, Tokyo

As an Interactive Art Director at Moment Factory, I worked on bespoke interactive installations for conferences, festivals, and large-scale commissioned projects. The interactive department focused on integrating interactivity into new media proposals, including projects for LAX Airport, Madonna's live tours, and large projection-mapping productions. During this period, I co-founded the visual arts collective APM300 and performed live visuals, frequently using projection-mapped sculptures, for artists such as Gesaffelstein and Yuksek.

2011: Design intern, W+K, Tokyo

As a design intern at W+K, I worked on general deck presentations, design research and tech exploration.

2007–present: Jonas Johansson Design

I have run my own registered design practice since the age of 20. Initially focused on web development and graphic design, the practice has evolved toward bespoke design and artistic work centred on new media, interaction, audiovisual systems, and community-driven projects. I collaborate frequently with Smash Studio as a creative technologist and technical director, developing advanced projection mapping works, custom installations, and custom technical pipelines. My work often combines real-time systems, AI-based workflows, and custom-built electronics using platforms such as TouchDesigner, Unreal Engine, and ESP32-based hardware. I enjoy combining digital and physical, and have a vast understanding of sensor technology, materials, lighting and video technology.

Alongside my studio practice, I initiate and lead long-term artistic platforms and communities, including the artist residency Visualia, the Nordic Audiovisual Artists network, the lighting collective Svartljus, and the fulldome film festival Dome Dreaming.
